The FBI opened an investigation in 2017 to determine whether President Donald Trump was working for Russia, the New York Times reveals in its Friday, January 11 edition, citing unnamed sources.
Doubts and dismissal
According to the US daily, the US federal police had suspicions about Donald Trump's possible ties with Russia in the 2016 US presidential campaign.
Doubts that cost dear James Comey, boss of the FBI, sacked the following year by Donald Trump. James Comey had refused to pledge allegiance to the new US president and put an end to initial investigations into possible collusion with Russia.
The counterintelligence component had to determine whether Donald Trump had consciously or unconsciously worked for Moscow, and the criminal part was about James Comey's dismissal. According to the newspaper, it is unclear whether investigations into the counterintelligence aspect are continuing.
